Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Recovery Time

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Recovery Time

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Recovery Time | Tampa | St. PeteEyelid lift surgery (blepharoplasty) involves a significant recovery phase, similar to any other plastic surgery procedure. It is advisable for a patient to understand what to expect during the recovery period as well as how much downtime the procedure involves.

During the pre-operative consultation, the surgeon will discuss the recovery phase with the patient to make sure that they make an enlightened decision.

The surgeon will answer any questions that the patient may have and address their concerns on all facets of the surgery, including the approximate recovery duration.

Suncoast Skin Solutions, led by dependable board certified dermatologist Dr. Christopher Ewanowski, provides eyelid surgery to patients in Tampa, Brandon, Lutz, Seminole, Riverview, Brooksville, Winter Haven, Daytona Beach, Largo, St. Petersburg, Ocala, Central Florida, Florida, and surrounding communities.

Immediate Post-Op Phase

Most patients will undergo blepharoplasty on an outpatient basis. Following the surgery, the surgeon will cover the eyes gently with bandages. The patient may have to remain in the recovery area for a few hours where the bandages will be taken off. The patient should ask someone responsible to drive them back home following the eyelid surgery.

The surgeon will offer in-depth guidelines about post-op care for the eyes. They may recommend a lubricating ointment and cold compresses to mitigate post-op itching and inflammation as well as prescribe pain medications and antibiotics for a few days.

In the early recovery phase, patients commonly experience inflammation, bruising, mild irritation or dry eyes. Eye drops may be helpful in preventing dry eyes. In general, these symptoms resolve in one week, but the mild inflammation may persist for a longer period of time.

Initial Few Weeks

The patient should rest the eyes as much as possible in the initial week. They should avoid any activities that strain the eyes such as reading, surfing the web, watching TV, or wearing contact lenses in the initial few days. The plastic surgeon may recommend the patient to keep their head in an elevated position for the initial few days to expedite the healing process.

After the first week, the surgeon will typically remove the sutures, and most patients will be able to resume work or their normal routine.

In the initial two to four week after blepharoplasty, it is prudent to wear dark sunglasses to protect the eyes from the sun and wind. The patient should also take frequent naps as the eyes may tire quickly in the initial few weeks.

On top of this, the patient should also avoid lifting heavy weights, bending, and aggressive exercises in the first two to four weeks. This will reduce the chances of increased blood flow to the eyes. The surgeon will review the patient’s condition before advising them on when to resume full routine activities.

Length of the Recovery

It may be many weeks before the patient recovers fully from the eyelid surgery. The inflammation and redness will subside gradually. In general, patients can resume work in around seven to ten days. The eyes will gradually appear more alert and youthful.

Aftercare

The patient should apply ice therapy over the incision areas to address the soreness and inflammation in the initial two days following the blepharoplasty. For patients with dry eyes, the surgeon may prescribe eye drops.

The patient should avoid exposure to the sun and wind according to the surgeon’s advice. They can slowly increase activities that strain the eyes. It will take several weeks or months for the complete outcomes of the eyelid surgery to establish as the inflammation resolves entirely.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Procedure Steps

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Procedure Steps | Tampa | St. PeteEyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, helps mitigate the signs of aging around the eyelids to create a more youthful and rested eye appearance.

Eyelid surgery involves multiple steps. These steps can differ slightly depending on the surgical technique used for lower or upper blepharoplasty.

At the time of the initial consultation, the surgeon will explain the procedural steps to the patient. This will enable the patient to feel more confident and reassured about the surgery after understanding what the procedure entails.

Suncoast Skin Solutions, led by kind board certified dermatologist Dr. Christopher Ewanowski, provides eyelid surgery to patients in Tampa, Brandon, Lutz, Seminole, Riverview, Brooksville, Winter Haven, Daytona Beach, Largo, St. Petersburg, Ocala, Central Florida, Florida, and other suburbs and neighborhoods in this remarkable part of the US.

Anesthesia

The plastic surgeon may perform the eyelid lift procedure with the patient under local anesthesia and mild sedation.

If the procedure is more complicated, or the patient is quite anxious, the plastic surgeon may choose to perform the blepharoplasty under general anesthesia. An anesthesiologist or a registered nurse anesthetist will administer the anesthesia.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

After the patient is under anesthesia, the surgeon will initiate the lower blepharoplasty procedure by placing tiny incisions in pre-determined areas.

These incisions are typically hidden in the natural creases of the skin beneath the lower lashes. The surgeon will eliminate excess fat or skin through the incisions as well as tighten loose underlying muscles.

The patient may require an additional fat transfer procedure or dermal filler injectables in case they have significant depressions beneath the lower eyelids. The surgeon will seal the incisions carefully once the eyelid surgery is complete.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

In this procedure, the surgeon places incisions in the natural creases of the upper eyelids. They will trim the loose skin through these incisions to mitigate the upper lid droopiness as well as address concerns of partial vision obstruction. If the underlying muscles are sagging or weak, the surgeon may reposition these through the incisions as well.

After removing the extra skin, the surgeon will lift and reattach the remaining skin to develop smooth and more youthful looking upper eyelids. They will then close the incisions with fine stitches.

Transconjunctival Eyelid Surgery

The surgeon may recommend a transconjunctival blepharoplasty if the patient does not need skin tightening but only requires a reduction in fatty pockets around the lids. This procedure is relatively less invasive and suitable for patients that do not have major puffiness in the under eye area.

After the anesthesia, the surgeon will place a few small incisions within the lower lid and remove excess fatty deposits through these incisions enhancing the appearance of the area. This procedure does not involve muscle tightening and skin excision.

Recovery

Following the blepharoplasty, the patient can typically return home on the day of the procedure itself. In general, the patient will require one week of downtime after which they can resume their routine or return to their workplace. In the initial two or three days, the patient can apply ice therapy to reduce the inflammation.

The surgeon may prescribe mild pain drugs and a topical cream for relief in the initial recovery period. The patient should not expose the treated areas to the sun for the initial several weeks.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Risks & Safety

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Risks & Safety | Tampa | St. PeteEyelid plastic surgery is an intricate procedure as it involves the delicate eye area. However, in the hands of an experienced and well-qualified eyelid surgeon, this risk is significantly minimized.

Blepharoplasty is a relatively less invasive procedure in comparison to other facial surgeries. In general, the patient undergoes this surgery under only local anesthesia and mild sedation.

The patient should be committed to following the surgeon’s pre and post-op instructions for a safe and predictable recovery. At the time of the pre-operative consultation, the surgeon will inform the patient of the potential risks enabling them to make a salient choice.

Suncoast Skin Solutions, led by dedicated board certified dermatologist Dr. Christopher Ewanowski, provides eyelid surgery to patients in Tampa, Brandon, Lutz, Seminole, Riverview, Brooksville, Winter Haven, Daytona Beach, Largo, St. Petersburg, Ocala, Central Florida, Florida, and surrounding locations in the amazing Sunshine State.

Serious Complications

Ectropian, hematoma, and retinal detachment are some serious complications that could occur during or after blepharoplasty. However, these complications are rare with a low rate of occurrence.

Ectropian refers to the tendency of the lower eyelid to droop and become inverted. Such patients will need to undergo revision surgery to treat this condition.

A hematoma is the accumulation of excess blood and fluid beneath the skin in the incision areas. In case the blepharoplasty is undertaken with other facial surgical procedures such as brow lift or facelift, the risk of hematoma development increases.

The surgeon will place a small drainage tube underneath the skin for a few days to enable the surplus fluid to drain out reducing the chances of hematoma development.

In exceptional cases, the patient may experience the retina being detached from the outer layers of the eyes causing retinal detachment. This occurs due to tears or holes in the retina. The patient will have to undergo further surgery to correct retinal detachment.

Minor Post-Op Complications

Some patients may experience one or more of the following minor complications after eyelid lift surgery:

  • Infection
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Poor reaction to anesthesia
  • Problems in keeping the eyes closed during sleep
  • Excessive tearing
  • Burning sensation in the eyes
  • Whiteheads formation after suture removal
  • Visible scarring

Most of these post-operative symptoms will typically resolve in a few days. But in case the patient experiences significant discomfort, they may seek further treatment. Only in rare cases will the complications be permanent.

Side Effects

Pain, Discomfort, and Irritation

The patient may experience slight irritation and soreness in the incision areas during the immediate post-operative phase. As the effect of the anesthesia wears off, the patient may experience pain or tightness in the lids. The surgeon may prescribe pain drugs in the initial week after the procedure.

Inflammation

In the first week after the procedure, the patient can expect a certain level of swelling. The patient can use ice therapy or cold compresses in the first two or three days to minimize inflammation. In addition, the patient should keep their head in an elevated position for the first few days

Scarring

The scarring is minimal in most blepharoplasty cases. The scars will remain discreet if the surgeon places the incision inside the lower lids.

Desirable Attributes in an Eyelid Lift Surgeon

A good blepharoplasty surgeon should have the below mentioned attributes:

  • Straightforward, professional, and easy to talk to
  • Impassioned about making a difference in the lives of patients through their surgical skills
  • Willing and able to understand the patient’s goals, desires, hopes, and facial anatomy
  • Possess artistic sensibilities and a comprehension of beauty, form, proportion, and a natural appearance
  • Able to display eyelid surgery before and after picture of past patients
  • Focused on the discreet incision placement

What is your previous experience in performing eyelid lift surgery?

Sometimes a cosmetic surgeon may have extensive experience in performing breast and body procedures. But they may not have relevant skills in performing upper face surgeries such as eyelid lift surgery.

The patient should select a surgeon with an in-depth understanding of facial and eye anatomy as well as vast experience and training in such surgical procedures. These surgeons will be able to individualize the surgery according to the unique requirements of the patient ensuring that the blepharoplasty is more targeted and less invasive.

Where will my eyelid lift surgery take place?

Eyelid lift surgery is typically undertaken at accredited surgical centers, and sometimes, at a private surgical suite. There are benefits and limitations as well as cost differences associated with each venue option.

Would you use general or local anesthesia for my surgery?

The plastic surgeon may perform eyelid surgery with the patient under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. The patient should also understand whether an anesthesiologist or a nurse anesthetist will be administering the anesthesia and whether they will remain in the operating room throughout the procedure.

What is the procedure for the blepharoplasty?

Eyelid lift surgery is a customized procedure. The patient can undergo surgery on the lower, upper, or both eyelids at the same time. The surgeon will usually place incisions in the natural folds of the eyelid, crease of the upper lid and right underneath the eyelashes or behind the lower eyelid.

What will the recovery period involve?

In general, eyelid lift recovery takes between seven to ten days. In case the surgeon places traditional sutures, they will remove these within the first week. The patient should not exert their eyes and allow them plenty of rest in the first one or two weeks.

Questions on the Cost

  • What are the approximate costs of blepharoplasty at your practice?
  • Does the cost estimate include the anesthesiologist’s fee and surgical facility related expenses?
  • What are the post-operative expenses associated with eyelid surgery, such as prescription medications and medical exams?

It is also vital for the patient to understand the potential risks and complications associated with eyelid surgery to make a well-informed decision.

Your Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Consultation

Your Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Consultation | Tampa | St. PeteA complex plastic surgery such as blepharoplasty should commence with an in-depth consultation to ensure that the outcomes are safe and predictable.

The consultation process lays down the foundation for a successful eyelid lift surgery. It allows the surgeon to develop a customized surgical plan according to the unique aesthetic and anatomical requirements of the patient.

Forming a Relationship

During the consultation process, the patient should openly ask questions or express any concerns that they may have about the eyelid surgery. This process also offers the surgeon and the patient an opportunity to develop solid rapport with each other.

This is vital because no one wants to go into surgery with an unclear mind. This means that there is a flaw in the process and increases the chances of a patient being dissatisfied with the outcome.

Suncoast Skin Solutions, led by the caring board certified dermatologist Dr. Christopher Ewanowski, provides eyelid surgery to patients in Tampa, Brandon, Lutz, Seminole, Riverview, Brooksville, Winter Haven, Daytona Beach, Largo, St. Petersburg, Ocala, Central Florida, Florida, and other neighborhoods and towns in this region of America.

Patient Education

A key concern for the surgeon during the consultation process will be to educate the patient on various aspects of the blepharoplasty and recommend the most suitable treatment options and techniques.

The patient must have clarity on the possible risks and benefits of the surgery, and the procedural steps as well as details on the estimated costs, financing, and insurance.

Cosmetic Goal Setting

At the time of the blepharoplasty consultation, one of the foremost things that a surgeon would like to comprehend is the reason for the patient seeking this surgery.

The surgeon will try to understand the exact areas about the patient’s eye appearance that bother them and incorporate these inputs into an individualized eyelid surgery plan.

The main goal of the surgeon will be to undertake the surgery in a precise and less invasive manner while still meeting the patient’s aesthetic goals.

Realistic Expectations

The surgeon will assist the patient in developing reasonable expectations from the blepharoplasty. They may show the patient eyelid lift surgery before and after pictures during the pre-operative consultation.

The patient should review these images closely to get a realistic idea of the outcomes of this surgery. Some patients may choose to combine blepharoplasty with brow lift surgery to accomplish their desired cosmetic goals.

Health Assessment

The surgeon will evaluate the health records of the patient and assess their overall medical condition. On top of this, they will assess the patient’s eye anatomy, level of skin laxity in the lower and upper eyelids, the extent of depressions and dark circles beneath the lids, skin type, and any signs of an untreated infection.

On their part, the patient should be forthcoming with the surgeon regarding their lifestyle behaviors as well as any prescription or non-prescription drugs that they may be taking at present. In case they have undergone an eye procedure such as LASIK in the past, they should reveal this to the surgeon as well.

Pre- and Post-op Care Instructions

At the time of the pre-operative consultation, the surgeon will provide the patient with pre and post-op instructions.

If the patient is a smoker, the surgeon will require them to discontinue smoking for a specified period before and after the eyelid surgery. They may also alter the schedule of certain medications that the patient presently uses in discussion with the prescribing physician.

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Before and After Photos

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Before and After Photos | Tampa The area around the eyes is among the first facial sites to show signs of aging. Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid plastic surgery, can treat under eye bags and droopy upper lids that develop as a person ages.

This relatively minor cosmetic surgery can help a person appear younger and rejuvenated.

The surgeon may display eyelid lift surgery before and after images to the new patient at the time of the pre-operative consultation.

These pictures create an environment of trust and transparency between the eyelid surgeon and the patient. Moreover, they enable the patient to view the potential outcomes of the surgery and make a well-considered decision.

An Established Business

Suncoast Skin Solutions, led by the committed board certified dermatologist Dr. Christopher Ewanowski, provides eyelid surgery to patients in Tampa, Brandon, Lutz, Seminole, Riverview, Brooksville, Winter Haven, Daytona Beach, Largo, St. Petersburg, Ocala, Central Florida, Florida, and surrounding locations.

Visual Evidence for New Patients

Upon viewing eyelid lift surgery before and after images, the patient may feel more confident and reassured about the blepharoplasty procedure.

These images will help them develop a detailed understanding of the possible results of the eyelid surgery. New patients can make better-informed decisions on the procedure after viewing these photographs.

Prospective patients understand that if eyelid surgery was able to provide aesthetically appealing results to another patient, it could potentially do the same for them as well. Blepharoplasty ‘before and after’ images offer conclusive proof that fosters an environment of mutual trust and transparency between the surgeon and the patient.

Any patient that goes to this clinic should ask to see these images during the consultation since they are not available on the website as of mid November of 2018.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Eyelid lift surgery ‘before and after’ photos present the real story more eloquently than words can. The plastic surgeon will provide detailed information on the procedure verbally as well. However, words can be open to interpretation, difficult to understand, or simply incredulous.

On the other hand, before and after images offer the patient, strong visual proof. The barriers of language do not restrict pictures from presenting the real story. But the surgeon should be careful not to modify or photo-shop these pictures as this could be misleading to the patient.

In the case of blepharoplasty before and after pictures, the adage “A picture is worth more than a thousand words” is certainly true.

Social Media Use to Increase Awareness

Social media platforms are hugely popular today. Plastic surgeons can harness the mass appeal of these online forums to raise public awareness on these procedures by displaying eyelid lift surgery before and after images on these platforms.

Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, and Instagram are some universally popular image-sharing platforms. Surgeons can use these powerful forums to connect with their audiences.

Effectively using eyelid surgery before and after images on social media can help the surgeon engage with thousands of individuals in their target audience. In addition, pictures offer conclusive proof to prospective patients enabling them to make poignant choices.

Dr. Ewanowski has no problem with being transparent. In the era of full disclosure and very little privacy, someone certainly should know what they are signing up for when it comes to plastic surgery. This clinic, which has enriched so many peoples’ lives, works hard to make sure all patients are aware of what they are contemplating.

This is why the consultations are so meaningful.

How much does Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Cost?

How much does Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Cost | Tampa | St. PeteEyelid lift plastic surgery (blepharoplasty) is usually undertaken as elective surgery. This means that the patient will not receive insurance coverage for this procedure.

Therefore, the cost of the surgery becomes an important starting point for many patients. The surgeon will explain the estimated costs of the blepharoplasty to the patient at the time of the initial consultation.

The accomplished Suncoast Skin Solutions, led by board certified dermatologist Dr. Christopher Ewanowski, provides eyelid surgery to patients in Tampa, Brandon, Lutz, Seminole, Riverview, Brooksville, Winter Haven, Daytona Beach, Largo, St. Petersburg, Ocala, Central Florida, Florida, and surrounding communities in the marvelous Sunshine State.

Factors Affecting the Price Tag

Various aspects impact the cost of the upper and lower eyelid lift surgery at a particular practice. Practices in main metropolitan cities will usually have higher costs relative to practices in small towns in the interiors. The average cost of living differs in various regions creating a difference in financial responsibilities.

Aspects such as quality standards of a practice, personalized service, equipment, and the credentials of the support team affect the price tag of a procedure. The patient can receive eyelid surgery at a hospital, surgical center, or surgical suite.

The costs and benefits vary with each option. The surgeon’s fee is another vital cost component which depends on their qualifications, reputation, and experience in the field of eyelid surgery.

While some patients may require only upper or lower lid cosmetic surgery, others may need a combination of the two procedures. Some patients may require only transconjunctival blepharoplasty, which could cost slightly less.

If the patient chooses to undergo the blepharoplasty with other procedures such as Botox or brow lift, the overall dollar figure of the procedure will increase as well.

Insurance Aspect

Eyelid lift surgery is an elective procedure which is not eligible for insurance coverage. Notably, patients with ptosis may be eligible for coverage.

In this condition, the upper eyelids sag heavily causing vision obstructions. Patients with ptosis may receive full or partial coverage from the insurance company.

In such cases, the patient should speak to the plastic surgeon and insurer in advance. The surgeon’s staff may be able to offer the patient assistance with the insurance paperwork.

Financing Options

The practice may accept major credit cards as a mode of payment for blepharoplasty. The patient can avail financing options such as bank loans. They can also seek loans from specialized medical care financing firms for loans at competitive rates of interest.

These firms usually offer quicker loan approvals and convenient monthly installments of up to 60 months. Patients can also seek private loans from friends and family for their eyelid surgery.

Choose a Salient Provider

Blepharoplasty cost at a specific practice does not necessarily indicate their quality standards. Therefore, patients should focus on identifying the most suitable treatment provider for their needs instead.

Patients should select a provider who will not compromise on the standards and quality to reduce procedure costs. However, the provider may try to render their services to the patient at more affordable fees. Their charges for the eyelid lift surgery will anyway fall within a competitive price range.

What is Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?

shutterstock 26787784 200x300 - What is Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?A person may sometimes appear older, angry, or sad due to tired or old looking eyes. However, it is possible to treat these aging effects around the eyelids effectively with blepharoplasty plastic surgery.

Blepharoplasty, including upper or lower eyelid surgery, can improve the functional and aesthetic aspects of the eyes. Sometimes, a patient may need both upper and lower lid surgery together. The procedure can also treat heavily sagging upper lids that may be causing partial vision obstruction.

Suncoast Skin Solutions, led by the accomplished board certified dermatologist Dr. Christopher Ewanowski, provides eyelid surgery to patients in Tampa, Brandon, Lutz, Seminole, Riverview, Brooksville, Winter Haven, Daytona Beach, Largo, St. Petersburg, Ocala, Central Florida, Florida, and surrounding locations in this part of the nation.

Blepharoplasty Benefits

  • Eliminates upper lid puffiness by removing fatty pockets around the eyes with an upper blepharoplasty.
  • Removes sagging skin, folds, and lines around the lower lids.
  • Treats drooping upper lids, which may cause vision obstruction.
  • Addresses under eye bags.
  • Treats the visible white beneath the iris which may occur due to drooping lower lids.

Upper Blepharoplasty

Aging and other factors can cause the eyelid muscles to become loose and the lid tissue to stretch leading to sagging upper eyelid skin due to elasticity loss. Consequently, the upper eyelids appear wrinkled and droopy making the face appear older.

In such cases, the patient can undergo an upper eyelid surgery to address the concerns and restore a younger, rested eye appearance. Certain patients may experience severely droopy upper eyelids (ptosis). This can occur simultaneously with aging lines over the lids.

The eyes may appear partially closed with droopy upper eyelids even when the patient is awake. This distortion in the eye appearance may result from an underlying condition known as ptosis. Upper blepharoplasty can treat these conditions effectively.

The surgeon commences this procedure by placing an incision along the natural contour of the eyelid crease to keep it inconspicuous. They will use this incision to eliminate loose upper eyelid skin making it smoother, and subsequently seal the incisions with fine sutures.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

The eyelids can look puffy and tired due to weakened muscles and loose tissue. Furthermore, the lid skin can appear wrinkled and rough. Lower eyelid surgery can improve this condition.

To perform a lower blepharoplasty, the surgeon will place a small incision either on the skin or within the lid to eliminate excess skin and reduce the appearance of puffy under eye bags. They will place the incisions just beneath the lid margin to hide any future scarring.

Through these incisions, the surgeon will also tighten the underlying weak muscles. In case there are excess fatty pockets in this area, the surgeon will remove or redistribute it to produce more youthful looking eyes.

Recovery

After the procedure, the patient should use ice therapy on the treated area frequently for the initial 48 hours to feel at ease and help the inflammation subside. A majority of patients resume their routine in around one week. It is crucial to protect the eyes from sun exposure for the next several months.
