What is Nail Fungus?

A fungal nail infection, also known as onychomycosis, is a disease of the nail that causes the fingernails or toenails to thicken, yellow, separate, or create a white buildup of debris. This type of fungus is similar to other fungi that may cause infections on other parts of the body, like athlete's foot or jock itch. When the fungus has a warm, moist place to grow, it takes over the area and causes an infection. Catching nail fungus early can help patients treat their condition with minimal intervention, so we encourage our patients to come in for a consultation as soon as they see changes in the texture or color of their nails.

How Much Do Treatments for Nail Fungus Cost?

The cost of your nail fungus treatments at Suncoast Skin Solutions is going to vary depending on the type of treatment you choose to receive, the extent of treatment needed to achieve your desired results, and your health insurance coverage. To find out a more accurate cost for your nail fungus treatments, we encourage you to come in for a private consultation with one of our expert staff members.

What Causes Nail Fungus?

The nail fungus that causes an infection on the fingernails and toenails is the same type of fungus that causes the development of ringworm, jock itch, and athlete's foot. Patients who give this fungus a dark, moist, and warm place to develop are more likely to see the development of this nail disease. Patients who are also at a higher risk of developing this condition are over the age of 65, have poor circulation in their hands and feet, wear artificial or acrylic nails, swim in public pools, wear closed-toe shoes, or have recently injured the area of skin around the nails. We also find patients who have recently gone to nail salons for manicures or pedicures may develop nail fungus.

What Treatments are Available for Nail Fungus?

The board-certified dermatologists and medical professionals at Suncoast Skin Solutions are proud to offer the following treatments for nail fungus:

  • Oral prescription medication

It's important to note that patients may require taking oral medication to treat their nail fungus for 6 to 12 weeks. After the oral medication has completely wiped out the fungal nail infection, it may take up to a year for the infected nail to grow out and be replaced with new, healthy nail tissue.
