For many in the Bay Area, with its intense sun, it is not a question of ‘if,’ but rather ‘where’ and ‘when.’ Mohs surgery is a subspecialty which pertains to the conservative elimination of skin cancers to preserve as much tissue as possible, and then to cosmetically repair the consequent wound.
In comparison to routine excision, Mohs surgery looks at 99 percent more of the edges of the eliminated tissue. This offers a much higher rate of clearance for tumors. It can be bothersome enough to have surgery once for a basal cell on the nose of a melanoma on the cheek. However, repeating the process for the same improperly excised cancer is quite unnecessary.
